Adult and returning education student numbers have increased at UW-Waukesha. When non-traditional students return they are often left out of the loop for on campus groups and activities.

However, New Horizons has been changing that mindset and gives adult students an opportunity to meet new people that share similar life stories and allows them to find their own niche on campus.

Chris Roland, former student services advisor at UW-Waukesha, formed the club when he came to campus over five years ago. Said Roland, "It was important that we had a group on campus to help adult students throughout their school year the way every other student has. New Horizons gives those students a chance at a college experience that all students enjoy."

Terry Meyer, club president, is a returning adult student that has taken full advantage of what New Horizons offers. "I came back to school last fall not knowing anyone or what to expect," said Meyer. "Because of New Horizons, I've been able to meet more people than I thought possible, and I really feel like I've been able to make a difference on campus, forming the experience in college I was hoping for."

Every semester New Horizons holds several on and off-campus activities, giving the adult students a chance to interact with the rest of students and faculty. This semester the group held a bonfire and hiking activity at the Field Station.

Additionally, they are planning an 80s theme dance Nov. 18 on campus. Working with other clubs on campus, New Horizons hopes to bring together all students for an evening of fun and dancing. "It's just a fun way of getting as many students together as possible for a fun night of socializing and dancing," said Meyer.

Weekly meetings for New Horizons are held every Thursday at noon in C158. Anyone with questions or interest in joining the group is encouraged to go to the meetings or e-mail Meyer at MEYET4289@uwc.edu
