Wisconsin Faith & Freedom Presidential Kickoff

The remaining republican presidential candidates have now turned their attention to Wisconsin. Newt Gingrich, Mitt Romney, and Rick Santorum were speaking at the Country Springs Hotel in Waukesha on behalf of the Wisconsin Faith & Freedom Presidential Kickoff event on Saturday March 31. Along with the three GOP candidates were other local and national representatives such as congressman Paul Ryan and political activist Ralph Reed. Each candidate stated the issues that were most important to them as well as the dire need to remove Barack Obama from office. This event served as a starting point for this week of campaigning leading up to the Republican primary election on Tuesday April 3. 

Court Appeal

It has been 25 years since the UW-Waukesha tennis courts have been renovated. In that time, they have been used for numerous tennis lessons, pick up matches, and UW-Waukesha tennis team practices. However, the courts are now close to useless. The surface has eroded into powder, there are plants growing from cracks, and the lines have faded away.  

Look before you merge

The Waukesha Community came together on Jan. 31 at WCTC and on Feb. 6 at UW-Waukesha to discuss higher education in Waukesha County. The overall goal, brought forth by State Rep. Paul Farrow and Waukesha County Executive Dan Vrakas, was to help students obtain post-secondary education and fill the needs of local employers.

Budget lapse is now easier on the pocket

Last semester, UW-Waukesha learned that they would have to pay up to $300,000 to the state of Wisconsin, a sum that has now been lessened to $118,000. 

Twin Championships

Both the UW-Waukesha men's and women's basketball teams finished their respective seasons cutting down the nets as they became 2012 Wisconsin Junior College Athletic Association state champions. Winning state titles is nothing new for either team. The men won their fifth title under Coach Neal Nelson, and the women won their eighth title under Coach Jack Hervert.

March is not just about St. Patrick's Day

What comes to mind when you think about March? Most people think of St. Patrick's Day, leprechauns and a "Shamrock Shake" we'll say. March however is far more important than most know; it is Women's History Month.

On Feb. 23, UW-Waukesha students were treated to a special event, national "Chili Day". For students it was a great chance to have fun and enjoy some free food.  For the staff it was a great opportunity to show off their cooking skills and also enjoy bragging rights for the next year. Harry Muir, dean of UW Waukesha came away with the title "chili king", unseating the previous champion, Sue Kalinka.

Lady Cougars Continue Great Season

The UW-Waukesha women's basketball team took care of business Friday, Feb. 10, with a 75-62 win over UW-Barron. The win improved their record to 18-7 and strengthened their conference record to 16-3.

A memorial Saturday afternoon on the campus of UW-Waukesha for former Associate Dean Phil Zweifel attracted several hundred people. Several speakers paid tribute to his devotion to teaching, his love of golf and the friendships he made during several decades at the school.
